Ever wondered what students at Pacifica High School really think about the cafeteria food? Well, the opportunity has come for students to share their real opinions on what they think of the provided breakfast and lunch through a survey. They were asked what their thoughts on the food are, what could make them more inclined to eat it, and why they may like certain meals more than others. After collecting all of the responses from students across all grade levels, it was revealed that many students are very split on liking or disliking the food. From portion sizes to flavor, and even to presentation, students did not hold back their thoughts about the meals they are eating.
Many students eat the food once or twice a week, depending on what is being served and if it tastes good that day. Students express that many times, the meal choices tend not to be hot or are too dry and oily. Most of the food is not always the healthiest either, but according to what the students say, by far the healthiest and equally tasty meal is the Turkey Wrap. One of Pacifica’s Seniors, Shane Dao, expresses that most of the food is not as healthy as a Turkey Wrap: “Considering I want to gain weight and get good protein in, I got the turkey wrap because it has roughly 600 calories, 40 grams of protein, and it doesn’t taste bad either, there’s a good blend of everything, from the turkey and bacon to the lettuce and tomato.” Shane also expresses what he thinks would help the cafeteria food be more appetizing, and he explains, “If it were my decision, I would add some protein shakes, with a blend of banana, strawberry, and blueberries, with protein powder scoops or milk. I actually really enjoy the pasta on some days, which is why I also would suggest larger pasta portions, with more flavor varieties, especially ones with cheese. More culturally diverse food would be awesome, too. And honestly, as much as the food is good on some days, it has to have good presentation for people to actually want to eat it.” Many students like the Turkey Wraps, but most will choose the pizza because it’s the safest option. Some will even choose Uncrustables because they’re pre-packaged with no way to get germs on them.
Overall, the school food could definitely be better. Students expressed how they feel and what is wrong with the food itself. Generally, Pacifica students wish there were better options. While the cafeteria has a few meal choices that are better than others, it’s clear that healthier and fresher options are wanted. Whether the changes are big or small, listening to student voices is the first step towards creating a better lunch experience for everyone.
