With the end of the year closing on Pacifica students, there’s anticipation in the air for many events. One such is the much-awaited Prom 4 All hosted by Life Skills. From the smell of burgers wafting from the In-N-Out truck to the sound of laughter coming from games, this event turned out to be a highlight of the year. Part of Pacifica’s Life Skills goal is to provide inclusion opportunities, and Prom 4 All was one of the ways they accomplished this goal. With a turnout of over 200, this event was a huge success and helped foster an environment of acceptance on our campus!
At Prom 4 All, students had plenty of activities to choose from that made the event feel fun and welcoming for everyone. Guests could challenge their friends to classic games like Connect Four, Jenga, and tic-tac-toe, or take a break to pick out colorful hair clips and get temporary tattoos. On top of that, there were snow cones and cotton candy for anyone wanting a sweet treat, and an In-N-Out truck for those who paid the $8 meal price. All of these options helped create an inclusive, carnival-like atmosphere where students could relax, interact with one another, and enjoy the celebration in whatever way felt most comfortable to them.
Students like Senior Melody Davis showed how powerful Prom 4 All can be when general education and special education students come together. During the event, Melody volunteered by helping make cotton candy for guests. She explained that Prom 4 All “gives the chance for the general education students to connect with the special education students and to include them in a school event.” Melody said she already volunteers with these students and takes unified classes with them, which has helped her build strong bonds. For her, the purpose of Prom 4 All was to “spread kindness and inclusion and positivity” and to remind people “to be kind to everybody, no matter their ability or disability.”
For special education teachers like Mrs. Spencer, Prom 4 All grew out of a long‑standing tradition and a desire to include more students. She explained that the event began as an end‑of‑year dance for Connections Club, but it expanded when staff realized that many students in special education do not get to participate in a lot of extracurricular activities. To fix this, they decided to hold Prom 4 All during the school day “so that everyone can participate.” Mrs. Spencer said the event “gives everyone the opportunity to just share the excitement of being a student at Pacifica” and helps students meet new friends and make connections that carry on to other activities throughout the year. According to her, the feedback from students and families has been simple but powerful: people had a lot of fun and “can’t wait for the next one.”
Pacifica’s special education department is dedicated to promoting success, diversity, and acceptance on our campus. Prom 4 All attained each of these goals in a way that was fun for everybody involved, and they continue making a lasting impact on campus. Thank you to all the amazing staff and student volunteers who made this possible!
