The results are in, and the Pacifica High School NJROTC Brain Brawl team has officially returned from the national stage, marking a historic chapter for our unit. Competing against the most elite academic teams in the country, our cadets proved that their mental fortitude is just as sharp as their drill precision. This journey to Nationals was the culmination of countless hours spent mastering naval science, current events, and maritime history. We are incredibly proud of how these scholars represented the Mariner spirit under the highest pressure, proving that when it comes to intellect and teamwork, Pacifica stands among the best in the nation.
Brian Dang
Reflecting on the experience, Cadet Lieutenant Brian Dang emphasized that the trip was as much about camaraderie as it was about competition. While the team faced a steep learning curve due to the unfamiliar national format and the specialized nature of the questions, their resilience remained unshaken. “We were still able to persevere through and get far,” Dang noted, highlighting the team’s ability to adapt under pressure. That perseverance paid off, with the Mariners securing an impressive 5th-place finish in the nation. For Dang, the event carried extra weight as his final NJROTC competition. He expressed a deep sense of satisfaction with the result, leaving behind a legacy of success and high expectations. “Although the road ends here for me,” he shared, “I know the rest of the team will be able to surpass our placements this year.”

Zack Nguyen
The momentum continued with Cadet Lieutenant Junior Grade Zack Nguyen, who noted that the team not only upheld Pacifica’s reputation but also matched the school’s high-water mark from three years ago. The trip to Daytona Beach, Florida, offered more than just a seat at the buzzer; it provided the team with a formal tour of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a crash course in “East Coast style” competition. “We as a team were able to adapt to the style of questions fairly quickly,” Nguyen explained, noting that while the unconventional format was a challenge, it provided invaluable insight for the program’s future. Looking ahead, Nguyen is already focused on the next season, citing a strong roster of returning cadets and aspiring “brawlers.” To ensure this year’s 5th-place success is only the beginning, he plans to lead summer study sessions, keeping the team’s knowledge sharp and ready for the new opportunities awaiting them in the fall.

Caitlyn Tsi
Echoing the sentiment of her fellow cadets, Cadet Ensign Caitlyn Tsi highlighted that while the trophy was a major victory, the personal growth and bonds formed were equally significant. For Tsi, the trip was defined by “memories made and the laughter shared,” making the journey to Florida an experience she is deeply grateful for. She noted that while being first-timers at the national level brought challenges—particularly the logistical differences between West Coast and East Coast competition styles—the team’s ability to secure fifth place was an impressive feat. “It was the highest we’ve placed in a few years,” she remarked, underscoring the magnitude of their achievement. Looking toward the future, Tsi is confident that this year’s ‘scouting mission’ has laid the groundwork for an even stronger performance next season. With a firsthand understanding of the national format and a clearer roadmap of what to study, she believes the team is now better equipped than ever to climb even higher on the national leaderboard.
The success at Brain Brawl Nationals marks a definitive high point for the Pacifica High School NJROTC, blending a prestigious 5th-place national ranking with invaluable lessons in adaptability. While the “East Coast style” of competition presented unexpected hurdles, the Mariners proved they belong among the country’s elite, returning home with both a trophy and a renewed sense of purpose. As the unit bids a proud farewell to seniors like Cadet Lieutenant Brian Dang, the future looks exceptionally bright. With a seasoned core of returning cadets and a strategic plan to master the national format, the road from Daytona Beach back to Pacifica is paved with momentum. This year’s performance wasn’t just a finish line—it was a blueprint for even greater victories to come.
