Exciting changes are on the horizon at Pacifica! Starting this semester, a point system is being introduced to recognize students that embody the core values of Pacifica, through the acronym “MARINERS”. Although currently it is exclusive to freshmen, this program will expand to all students next fall. During homeroom on February 24, 2025, ninth graders were introduced to this system in an educational video. Freshmen learned they can earn Anchor Points from their homeroom teachers by demonstrating Mariner values (see image below). The goal is to collect as many points as possible by displaying these features, depending on which letter of “MARINER” they exemplify. These points can be exchanged for various prizes and privileges on campus, based on freshman feedback on what they are most interested in. To keep track of their points, students will use the 5Star app, making it easy to monitor their progress.
The program officially launches on March 10, when ninth-grade homeroom teachers will begin awarding points to students who demonstrate either the “M” or “A” in “MARINERS” – “Mindful of social and emotional well-being” and “Accountable for our choices and actions.” Additionally, letters (and their corresponding attributes) will be introduced in the following weeks, opening up further opportunities for students to display their “MARINERS” values.
The teacher leader in charge of this program is none other than Mr. Girba, who has taken great initiative to bring this program to fruition. He explains, “Our goal for the Mariner recognition points, or Anchor points, is to reward all students that act appropriately on campus and act in the Mariner way. We want our school to exemplify great values and make it a better place for everybody: 9th graders, 10th graders, 11th graders, 12th graders, staff, and anybody that comes on campus as a guest.” Mr. Girba’s statement highlights the community-focused vision of the Anchor points and the ultimate purpose of creating a respectful and supportive school culture. This program is much more than just individual rewards; it will benefit everybody!
Anchor points are a great opportunity for Mariners to be recognized and rewarded for their efforts in creating a positive community. So stay engaged, and start earning those Anchor Points, Freshmen! We look to your experience to see how this trial run goes so we all can benefit from it in the fall!
