Four years of hard work, dedication, and commitment. That’s what the senior boys and girls basketball players were honored for in January as they faced off in critical North Hills League matchups. Family, friends, and students filled the Pacifica gymnasium to celebrate the six boys and seven girls who will be graduating. They watched the Mariners take on the El Modena Vanguards, and the Lady Mariners square off against the Foothill Knights.
Before the games, the seniors were introduced to the crowd as they walked across the court for one final time, accompanied by their chosen family and friends. It was a moment to reflect on the unforgettable memories created in the Mariners’ gym over the years.
The boys’ varsity team, led by head coach David Freidman, was determined to make the most of their senior night. From the start, they quickly built a ten-point lead over the Vanguards in the first half. After the break, the Mariners returned with relentless intensity. Senior guard Luke Thompson delivered three consecutive three-pointers, expanding the Mariners’ lead to an impressive 20 points. As the game neared its end, senior guard Chase Simpson sank a free throw to seal the league victory for the Mariners, adding the perfect finish to a memorable senior night.

The girls’ varsity team, led by head coach Martin Nishimi, engaged in a hard-fought battle against the Foothill. Senior center Natalia Walden-Schulz exhibited exceptional athleticism as she took charge of the Mariners’ offense. Junior guard Chloe Risk, the team’s leading scorer, also stepped up to provide valuable support. Although the Mariners came up short in the game, the overwhelming sense of gratitude and celebration for the seniors’ dedication and hard work overshadowed the outcome. It was a night to honor their contributions, which will be remembered long after the final buzzer.
